What the service covers

We work with foreign businesses and Liechtenstein entities that supply in Liechtenstein. We prepare the VAT notification and coordinate the file. A licensed Liechtenstein trustee, named in your engagement letter, advises on liability, acts as tax representative where one is needed and files. Tax advice is a trustee activity under the Trustee Act (TrHG), Art. 2(d).

Liechtenstein and Switzerland form one common VAT territory under a treaty, and the Swiss tax administration's practice publications apply by analogy, with deviations possible in individual points because of Liechtenstein conditions. Where a case needs certainty in advance, the partner can seek a tax ruling requested through a licensed trustee.

What is included

VAT liability check

We assemble the facts: turnover in Liechtenstein and abroad, the kind of supplies, any holding activity, a possible opt-in. The licensed trustee advises on liability.

VAT notification

We prepare the written notice to the Steuerverwaltung. The licensed partner files it within the 30 days of MWSTG Art. 53(1).

Tax representative for a non-resident

A representative with domicile or seat in Liechtenstein, as MWSTG Art. 54(1) requires, provided by the licensed trustee. We coordinate the appointment.

Portal set-up support

We guide the eID.li, eVertretung and eMWST steps. The identity steps are yours, done in person where the route requires it.

Returns and deregistration

Prepared with the licensed partner or a bookkeeper. The records sit with our bookkeeping service, which also covers what the annual accounts of a Liechtenstein company must contain.

No VAT number, exemption or refund is guaranteed, and no processing time is quoted, because none is published.

Who must register, and who need not

Turnover under CHF 100,000

Exempt with less than CHF 100,000 of turnover within a year, in Liechtenstein and abroad, leaving out supplies exempt under Art. 21(2) (MWSTG Art. 10(2)(a)). The next card can apply first.

A foreign business with Art. 8(1) services only

A business with its seat, domicile or permanent establishment outside Liechtenstein and Switzerland is exempt whatever its turnover if it supplies in the common VAT territory only the kinds of supply listed in Art. 10(2)(b), such as services located under Art. 8(1). Telecom and electronic services to non-taxable recipients are excepted.

A Liechtenstein business supplying only abroad

Exempt whatever its turnover, with the right to waive the exemption under Art. 11 (Art. 10(2)(d)). Once it also supplies in the common territory, the turnover test applies.

A holding or a group

Acquiring, holding and selling participations counts as business activity (Art. 10(1b)). Related Liechtenstein entities under single control can apply to form one VAT group (Art. 13(1)). The treatment of capital gains in Liechtenstein is a separate tax question.

An exempt business may opt in (Art. 11(1)); the waiver binds for at least one tax period (Art. 11(3)).

Must you register for VAT?

Question: Do you supply in Liechtenstein, or have a seat there?

  • Condition: Seat outside Liechtenstein and Switzerland, only listed supplies in the common territory

How registration works

VAT registration in eight steps

  1. Check liability

Who acts: VCS collects the facts, trustee advises

  2. Portal access

    eID.li, eVertretung, eMWST

    Who acts: Client

  3. Appoint the tax representative

    non-residents

Who acts: Trustee provides, VCS coordinates

  4. Notification

within 30 days of the start of liability

Who acts: VCS prepares, partner files

  5. Number assigned

    Who acts: Steuerverwaltung

  6. Security, if required

    Who acts: Steuerverwaltung decides

  7. Returns

quarterly by default, within 60 days of the period

    Who acts: Partner or bookkeeper

  8. Deregistration

within 30 days of the end of the activity, at the latest at the close of liquidation

Who acts: VCS prepares, partner files

Eight steps, each with its actor and the official period where one exists.
  1. Check liability

We collect the turnover, the supplies and any holding activity; the licensed trustee applies the turnover test and the exemptions to them.

  2. Portal access

The person who acts gets an eID.li, the company an activated eVertretung account, then eMWST access. No official time is published for this step.

  3. Appoint the tax representative

A non-resident appoints a representative domiciled in Liechtenstein, provided by the licensed trustee. The appointment creates no permanent establishment (Art. 54(3)).

  4. Notification

We prepare the written notice; the licensed partner files it within 30 days of the start of liability. For a foreign business, liability starts with its first supply in the common Liechtenstein-Swiss VAT territory.

  5. Number

The Steuerverwaltung assigns a non-transferable VAT number. The existing five-digit Liechtenstein number remains valid next to the Swiss UID. No official time is published for the assignment.

  6. Security

From a taxpayer with no domicile or seat in Liechtenstein, the Steuerverwaltung may require security for expected debts (Art. 84(2)). You provide it if asked.

  7. Returns

Quarterly by default (Art. 35(1)) and due within 60 days after the period (Art. 58(1)), prepared by the licensed partner or a bookkeeper.

  8. Deregistration

Once liability ends under Art. 14(2), written notice is due within 30 days of the end of the business activity, and at the latest at the close of the liquidation (Art. 53(2)). We prepare it; the licensed partner files it.

Not sure whether you must register?

Send us your turnover and the kind of supplies; we prepare the liability questions for the licensed trustee.

What you need to supply

  • Turnover in Liechtenstein and abroad, and the kind of supplies
  • The person who will use eID.li
  • The eVertretung activation application, if your partnership or foreign company does not already appear in eVertretung
  • Identification in person in Vaduz, if the eID route is not used
  • Your tax representative, if you have no seat in Liechtenstein
  • The date of your first supply in the common VAT territory

No further official document list is published; the licensed partner tells you if more is needed.

Practical problems and how they are handled

The register-deletion trap

A legal entity is deleted from the commercial register only once the Steuerverwaltung confirms the VAT is paid or secured (MWSTG Art. 85). We put VAT deregistration into the closing timeline.

Swiss number or Liechtenstein number

The five-digit Liechtenstein number remains valid and the Swiss UID does not replace it. We have found no official statement on whether a Swiss-registered business needs a separate Liechtenstein registration, so the licensed partner is asked.

Who the representative is

The act asks only for a domicile or seat in Liechtenstein (Art. 54(1)); the licensed trustee provides one. It is a VAT role, not the Repräsentant that domestic legal entities appoint under company law (PGR Art. 239).

Security from a foreign company

The Steuerverwaltung can require it, by cash deposit, sureties, bank guarantees or other listed forms (Art. 83(6), 84(2)). The amount is not published, so we promise nothing about it.

Need a representative for a non-resident business?

Tell us where your business sits and what it supplies; we coordinate the appointment through the licensed trustee.

Why work with us

Katrin Imhof prepares VAT files with the licensed partner. Before anything is filed, the licensed partner tests the turnover rule and the exemptions against your facts. We raise the Swiss-number question at the start and plan VAT deregistration into the closing timeline. Katrin is not a Rechtsanwalt or a licensed trustee; the licensed partner named in your engagement letter advises and files.

Frequently asked questions about VAT registration in Liechtenstein

Do I have to register if my turnover is below CHF 100,000?

Not if the test is met. Under MWSTG Art. 10(2)(a), a business is exempt with less than CHF 100,000 within a year, in Liechtenstein and abroad, leaving out supplies exempt under Art. 21(2). A business outside Liechtenstein and Switzerland with only Art. 10(2)(b) supplies is exempt whatever its turnover. You may opt in, binding for at least one tax period.

I am a foreign company selling only B2B services: do I need a number?

Possibly not. Under MWSTG Art. 10(2)(b), a business with its seat, domicile or permanent establishment outside Liechtenstein and Switzerland that supplies in the common territory only the kinds of supply listed there, such as services located under Art. 8(1), is exempt whatever its turnover. Telecommunications and electronic services to non-taxable recipients are excepted. The licensed partner checks your facts first.

Does my Swiss VAT number cover Liechtenstein?

The two countries form one common VAT territory, but the five-digit Liechtenstein VAT number remains valid and the Swiss UID does not replace it in Liechtenstein. We have found no official statement on whether a Swiss-registered business needs a separate Liechtenstein registration, so we put the question to the licensed partner.

Does a Liechtenstein company need a VAT number if it only sells abroad?

No. A business with a seat, domicile or permanent establishment in Liechtenstein that supplies exclusively abroad is exempt whatever its turnover (MWSTG Art. 10(2)(d)). It has the right to waive the exemption under Art. 11. Once it also supplies in the common territory, the CHF 100,000 turnover test applies.

Who can act as VAT representative for a non-resident?

MWSTG Art. 54(1) requires a representative with domicile or business seat in Liechtenstein for the taxpayer's procedural duties, and states no further qualification. The licensed trustee named in your engagement letter provides the representative; we coordinate. Under Art. 54(3), the appointment creates no permanent establishment under the Tax Act.

Is a VAT representative the same as the registered-office representative (Repräsentant)?

No. The Art. 54 representative handles procedural duties under the VAT Act. The Repräsentant of PGR Art. 239 is a company-law role, covered on our registered office page. A third role, the domestic representative of SteG Art. 91, belongs to income tax. This page covers only the VAT representative.

Can the tax office demand security from a foreign company?

Yes. From a taxpayer with no domicile or seat in Liechtenstein, the Steuerverwaltung may require security for expected tax debts (MWSTG Art. 84(2)). Security is given by cash deposit, sureties, bank guarantees or the other forms listed in Art. 83(6). The amount is not published; the Steuerverwaltung decides it.

How long do I have to register after I start trading?

Written notice is due within 30 days of the start of liability (MWSTG Art. 53(1)). For a foreign business, liability starts with its first supply in the common Liechtenstein-Swiss VAT territory (Art. 14(1)(b)). A business liable only for reverse-charge tax on foreign services registers within 60 days after the end of the calendar year (Art. 53(3)).

What does the Liechtenstein VAT number look like, and is it the UID?

The Steuerverwaltung assigns a non-transferable VAT number on registration (MWSTG Art. 53(1)). The existing five-digit Liechtenstein VAT number remains valid, and the Swiss company identification number (UID) does not replace it in Liechtenstein: Liechtenstein companies keep the five-digit number, as the national administration states.

How do I find or check a Liechtenstein VAT registration?

The national administration keeps a public VAT register that shows whether a firm is entered in the VAT register. We make no statement here about checks through other systems. Where a counterparty's status matters for your invoices, we look it up in that register with you before the invoice goes out.

Which VAT rates apply in 2026?

MWSTG Art. 25 sets the standard rate at 8.1 %, the reduced rate at 2.6 % for the goods and services listed in the act, and a special rate of 3.8 % on accommodation. These are the rates as the consolidated act states them; which rate applies to a given supply is checked by the licensed partner.

How are returns filed and how often?

Through the eMWST portal, mandatory since January 2025 and free to use. Settlement is quarterly by default (MWSTG Art. 35(1)), and the return is due within 60 days after the period (Art. 58(1)). Annual settlement is available on request up to CHF 5,005,000 of taxable turnover (Art. 35(1a)(b)); the net-tax-rate method has its own limit.

Can a holding company deduct input tax?

Acquiring, holding and selling participations counts as business activity (MWSTG Art. 10(1b)). Input tax on these activities and on reorganisations is deductible within the business activity that entitles to input tax deduction (Art. 29(2)); a stake of at least 10 % of the capital counts as a participation (Art. 29(3)). The licensed partner checks the structure; nothing is promised.

What happens if I do not register, or pay late, and what does the service cost?

Intentionally or negligently failing to register is fined up to CHF 10,000 (MWSTG Art. 86(1)(a)), unless another provision carries a higher penalty, such as tax evasion (Art. 87). Late payment bears interest without a reminder (Art. 77(1)): 4 % a year from 1 January 2026, collected only from CHF 100 of interest (MWSTV Art. 142(2)(a), (3)). Price on request.

How do I deregister, and why does it matter for closing a company?

Once liability ends under Art. 14(2), written notice is due within 30 days of the end of the business activity, at the latest at the close of the liquidation (MWSTG Art. 53(2)). The commercial register deletes a legal entity only once the Steuerverwaltung confirms the VAT is paid or secured (Art. 85), so we plan deregistration into the closing timeline.
