Trademark Registration in Liechtenstein
You or a licensed Liechtenstein representative files the mark; we prepare the file, coordinate and keep the dates.
- Protection for ten years from filing
- Opposition window of three months
- Official filing fee CHF 400, up to three classes
- Licensed representative or address for service

What we do and who files
Anyone may file a mark here; you do not have to move to Liechtenstein or own a company. Where you are established decides who acts for you.
Gathering the file
We collect the applicant details, the mark and your description of the goods, the same care as what a foreign founder signs before a Liechtenstein company is entered in the register.
Register search results
You or the licensed partner search the Office's register before filing. We pass the results on; the legal assessment of a conflict is the partner's.
The filing
The applicant files, or a licensed representative where the Markenschutzgesetz (MSchG) asks for one: a patent attorney under the PAG or a lawyer under the RAG.
Opposition and appeal
If an earlier owner opposes or the Office refuses, the licensed representative answers and appeals. Court actions are handled by a licensed lawyer, coordinated through our IP disputes service.
Renewal date in your file
The registration runs ten years from the filing date. We keep the renewal date in your file; the owner or the representative files the request.
Routes beyond the national filing
A Madrid registration can designate Liechtenstein with the same effect as a national filing. We explain the route; the engagement letter sets who files.

How the process works
No examination time is fixed by law. The 2026 amendment left filing, opposition and renewal unchanged.
Search the register
Optional: the Office does not check earlier marks. You or the partner search the Online Register; we collect the results.
Choose the representation
Outside Liechtenstein, the EEA and Switzerland, you appoint a Liechtenstein lawyer or patent attorney. EEA and Swiss applicants name a domestic address for service.
Prepare the application
We collect your description of the goods and services; the licensed partner drafts the list and the classes. The Office's application page lists what a filing holds.
File and pay
The application goes in online or on paper, fees paid in advance in Swiss francs. The filing date is the day the required documents are in.
Examination
The Office checks formal defects, unpaid fees and absolute grounds only, then enters and publishes the mark. A refusal can be appealed to the Government within 30 days.
Opposition window
An earlier owner may oppose within three months of publication. The mark owner then has one month to respond, through the representative where Art. 39 requires one.
Certificate
Once the registration is published in the official gazette, the Office sends a confirmation of registration to the owner or the representative.
Maintain the mark
Renew in the last twelve months before expiry, use the mark, and record a change of representative. We keep the dates in your file.

Do you need a Liechtenstein representative?
It depends on where you are established. Tell us, and we prepare the filing plan.
Documents you will need
- Applicant name and address, or a registered Liechtenstein company ready to be taken over; a power of attorney where Art. 39(1) applies
- The mark as it should appear in the register
- Your goods or services, in your own words
- A priority document, if you first filed within six months
- Supporting documents, none older than one year
- The owner's consent, if an agent files in its own name
The Office's application page says the application is signed; its online counter accepts an unsigned form and may ask for the signature later.

Problems we solve

The Office does not search for you
Earlier marks are not checked by the Office. Their owners object by opposition within three months of publication, so a search before filing matters.
Duties after the entry
Renew within the last twelve months before expiry. After five uninterrupted years without genuine use, the right cannot be enforced unless there are proper reasons.
The EU route is a different route
The Office describes an EUIPO application as protection in the EU states. The shared territory with Switzerland covers patents, such as a patent filed for Liechtenstein under the treaty with Switzerland.
An agent files in its own name
A mark filed in an agent's name without the owner's consent is excluded, and the owner can oppose. A nominee director Liechtenstein mandate is a separate engagement.
A brand inside a group
If the mark sits with placing the top company of a group in Vaduz, or with a licence application prepared for the Financial Market Authority, we plan both files together.
Start with a filing plan
Each mark starts with a plan of who files, which classes and which dates.
Why work with VCS
We prepare and coordinate the file; a licensed Liechtenstein patent attorney or lawyer, named in your engagement letter, files and acts. Our Legal department answers on +423 210 0003, Monday to Friday 10:00-18:00, at Rietstrasse 42 in Vaduz.

Frequently asked questions about trademark registration in Liechtenstein
Must a foreign applicant use a Liechtenstein lawyer or patent attorney to register a trademark?
It depends on where you are established. A party with no domicile, seat or establishment in Liechtenstein, another EEA state or Switzerland takes part only through a Liechtenstein lawyer or patent attorney. Advice and representation in IP matters belong to those licensed professions, so we prepare and coordinate while the licensed partner files and acts.
What is an address for service, and which applicants need only that?
A party with its domicile, seat or establishment in an EEA state or Switzerland needs a domestic address for service in Liechtenstein, and no lawyer or patent attorney. The statute draws the line at the EEA and Switzerland together, so a Swiss applicant falls into this group as well.
Can I register a Liechtenstein trademark without living or having a company in Liechtenstein?
Yes. Anyone may file a trademark application, and a domicile or establishment in Liechtenstein is not a condition of filing. The representation rule then decides who acts in the proceedings: a Liechtenstein lawyer or patent attorney, or only a domestic address for service, depending on where you are established.
Does an EU trade mark protect me in Liechtenstein?
The Office separates the routes. It describes an EUIPO application as protection in the member states of the EU, and it names the national filing and the Madrid designation as the ways to a Liechtenstein registration. Plan one of those two routes if you need protection in Liechtenstein.
If I hold a Swiss or an international registration, do I still need a national Liechtenstein one?
An international registration with effect for Liechtenstein has the same effect as a national application and registration, so designating Liechtenstein can replace a national filing. No source we read makes a Swiss registration cover Liechtenstein: the shared territory with Switzerland exists for patents only. Use in Switzerland does count as use.
Does the Office look for earlier conflicting marks, and what happens when an owner objects?
No. The Office examines absolute grounds and formal defects only. An earlier owner raises similarity by opposition within three months of publication of the registration. The mark owner then has one month to respond, and the opponent two months to reply. The parties can also ask jointly for time to settle.
How long does a Liechtenstein registration take?
No statute and no published figure fixes an examination time, so we quote none. The law fixes other periods: opposition within three months of publication, an appeal to the Government within 30 days of service, and a term of ten years from the filing date. We track each of these in your file.
What does the Office charge, and how many classes does the basic fee cover?
The 2026 text of the fee ordinance sets CHF 400 for a filing with up to three classes and CHF 50 for each class after the third. Opposition proceedings cost CHF 800. These are official fees, paid in advance in Swiss francs. Our fees and the partner's are on request.
How long does protection last, and when must it be renewed?
A registration is valid for ten years from the filing date and is renewed for ten years on request. The request goes in within the last twelve months before expiry. The Office sends a reminder but accepts no liability if it does not arrive, so we keep the date in your file.
What if I miss the renewal date?
A renewal request is still possible at the latest six months after expiry, with an additional fee of CHF 100. Further processing is excluded for the renewal deadline, so those six months are the outer limit, not a second chance after it. Diarise the twelve-month window instead of relying on the grace period.
Must I use the mark, and where does use count?
After five uninterrupted years without genuine use, the owner cannot enforce the right unless there are proper reasons. The five years run from the end of the opposition period or, if the mark was opposed, from the day the decision ending the opposition becomes final. Use in the EEA or Switzerland counts.
Can an agent or nominee file the mark on my behalf?
A mark filed in an agent's or representative's own name without the owner's consent is excluded, unless the agent justifies the act, and the owner can oppose on that ground. Beyond this rule we state nothing about holding a mark through a nominee; the nominee mandates themselves are a separate service.
How do I look up the Liechtenstein trademark register?
The register is public: anyone may inspect it and ask for information and extracts, and the Office of Economic Affairs keeps it. Its Online Register holds only marks registered and published in Liechtenstein. A register extract costs CHF 35 per mark under the fee ordinance.
Can I designate Liechtenstein in a Madrid registration?
Yes, and the effect equals a national filing. An applicant of Liechtenstein origin can have the Office transmit a Madrid request, for a statutory fee of CHF 200 besides the WIPO fees. Opposition against a Madrid registration designating Liechtenstein starts on the first day of the month after publication.
Did the 2026 amendment of the Trademark Act change how I file, oppose or renew?
No. LGBl. 2026 Nr. 148 changes Art. 1a on person designations and the customs-assistance part. The articles on filing, opposition, renewal, non-use and representation stay as they were. The law takes effect on 1 July 2026, under the reservation of the unused referendum period.
