Who Needs a Visa for Liechtenstein, and Where Do You Apply?
A stay without work of up to three months within six months needs no permit (AuG Art. 9). Whether your passport needs a visa is looked up on the Swiss SEM site that the Migration and Passport Office names. A visa-obliged person applies at the Swiss representation where they live, or at the Austrian, Hungarian or Lithuanian one at the locations on the official list. A longer stay needs a permit, and so does any work, apart from the cross-border service rule of AuG Art. 12.
Short answer
This page covers entry: the visa, and the first three months of a visit. Living or working in Liechtenstein is a separate question, and the relocation guide takes it from there. Vaduz Corporate Solutions does not sell visas and does not act in visa or permit procedures. The page states what the statutes and the authority say, with the article.

Do you need a visa for Liechtenstein?
The answer depends on the passport you hold: the lookup that the Migration and Passport Office (Ausländer- und Passamt, APA) names shows whether a visa is required. The APA points to the website of the Swiss State Secretariat for Migration (SEM), or to the entry and visa ordinance (VEV), and keeps no list of its own. Switzerland and Liechtenstein, as a rule, apply the same entry rules.
A visit is one question, and living or working is another. Whether a meeting counts as gainful activity turns on AuG Art. 10(2): any activity usually done for remuneration, even if unpaid. Check three things before you look anything up:
- the passport you will travel with
- the purpose of the visit
- the planned length of stay
Which rules govern entry into Liechtenstein?
Liechtenstein applies the Schengen entry rules. Its own visa and entry rules apply only where the Schengen acquis applicable to Liechtenstein has no different provision (Ausländergesetz, AuG, Foreign Nationals Act, Art. 2(3)). The Schengen accession protocol is dated 28 February 2008, and the consolidated text records 19 December 2011 as the date Art. 2(3) and 7(4) came into force.
The free-movement ordinance names, among its bases, the framework agreement of 3 December 2008 between Switzerland and Liechtenstein on visa procedure, entry and residence (PFZV Art. 1(2)(c)). The law is the AuG, LGBl. 2008 Nr. 311, read with the PFZV, LGBl. 2009 Nr. 350.
Who issues a Liechtenstein visa, and who decides?
A visa-obliged person applies at the representation named on the official list, the Swiss one by default. The visa is issued by the authorised representation abroad or by the APA (AuG Art. 8(1)), and the decision lies partly with the Swiss authorities and partly with the APA. The official visa page of the Migration and Passport Office does not say which cases go where.

Where do you apply if you live far from a Swiss embassy?
The default is the Swiss representation in the place where you live. At some locations another state is competent instead. These are examples from the official list, which can change; read the current list on the official page before you plan anything.
New Delhi
Austria is competent. The list also covers applications from Thimphu (Bhutan) that are made through an external service provider there.
Tirana
Austria is competent, as listed on the official page.
Chongqing
Hungary is competent, as listed on the official page.
Minsk and Chisinau
Hungary is competent in both cities, as listed on the official page.
Dublin, Zagreb and Kuala Lumpur
Austria is competent in all three, as listed on the official page.
Chicago and a block of US Midwest states
Lithuania is competent, as listed on the official page.
What must you meet to enter?
The entry conditions in AuG Art. 7 include the following, and Art. 8(3) adds a security rule:
- A valid passport.
- A visa, or an ETIAS travel authorisation under Regulation (EU) 2018/1240, where one is required.
- Sufficient financial means for the stay.
- No danger to public security and order or to the international relations of the country.
- No exclusion measure (Fernhaltemassnahme) against the person.
- No international arrest warrant for the person.
- Assured departure, for a temporary stay.
- Possible security: the authorities may ask for a time-limited guarantee declaration, insurance, a deposit or other security for care and return costs.
- For a person who is not visa-obliged but wants to take up residence: the assurance of a short-stay or residence permit before entering.
How does a visa application run, step by step?
Entry for a stay of up to three months without work runs in six steps. The official page gives no processing time and names no online portal, so this page states neither. Each step names who performs it where the sources do, because the traveller, the representation, the APA and the border authority each hold a different part.
Check whether a visa is required
for the passport you hold, on the SEM lookup or in the VEV. Done by you.
Find the competent representation
for your place of residence: Swiss by default, Austrian, Hungarian or Lithuanian at the listed locations. Done by you.
Apply at that representation
The fee follows Ausl-GebV Art. 12 unless an international agreement or an exemption applies. The decision lies partly with the Swiss authorities and partly with the APA.
Provide security if asked
A guarantee declaration, insurance, a deposit or other security may be required to cover care and return costs (AuG Art. 8(3)).
Enter
with a valid passport, a visa or exemption, and enough means. The EES is provided for in AuG Art. 71b(1); the APA announced its launch for 12 October 2025. Done by you and the border authority.
Stay at most three months within six months
without gainful activity. A longer stay needs a permit from the APA, and so does any work, apart from a cross-border service under AuG Art. 12. The Government decides a first residence permit for employed work, apart from the cases in Art. 26(4) (AuG Art. 67(1)). The residence permit page takes it from there.

What does a Liechtenstein visa cost under the statute?
The statutory fee is EUR 90 per admissible visa procedure under Ausl-GebV Art. 12, as read in October 2026. Agency service charges are not part of the statute, and this page gives no figure for them.

How long can you stay without a permit?
A stay without gainful activity of up to three months within six months needs no permit; more than three months within six needs one (AuG Art. 9(1)). The period counts from first entry and may not exceed three months in six. A shorter duration printed on the visa prevails (Art. 9(2)). The visa is the entry document. A stay beyond the permit-free period needs a permit, and a shorter duration printed on the visa prevails (AuG Art. 9(1)-(2)). Read the table row that matches your situation, and note that an EEA or Swiss national falls under a different law.

Can you work or hold business meetings on a visit?
Any gainful activity needs a permit, whatever the length of stay (AuG Art. 10(1)). To get one, see how a foreign employee obtains a work permit in Liechtenstein.
One exception exists. A self-employed person or a company seated outside the EEA and Switzerland, and its employees, may provide a cross-border service for at most eight days within 90 days (AuG Art. 12(1)). The visa obligation stays reserved.
The service must be notified to the APA at the latest two working days before it starts (Art. 12(2)). Art. 12(3) defines a cross-border service as a time-limited business activity in Liechtenstein, as a rule provided for remuneration. The statute names no meeting as allowed, and this page names no activity as allowed.
Is there a business, startup or entrepreneur visa?
No business, startup or entrepreneur visa was found in the acts read for this page. The entry routes are the visa, where one is required, and then the assurance of a permit for a stay to settle. Buying property, renting a flat, signing an employment contract, founding a business or taking a business stake has no influence on how the discretion in the permit procedure is exercised (ZAV Art. 17(2)). A company in Liechtenstein gives no right to a visa or to residence.
A founder who needs a company bank account for the new entity can read the account a new Liechtenstein company needs before it trades.
From our practice. We work on the corporate side: we prepare and coordinate company files with a licensed Liechtenstein partner. We do not act in visa or permit procedures. Advice on routes, refusals and appeals is for a lawyer (RAG Art. 8(1)(a)).

What changes if you stay longer or settle?
A stay over three months within six needs a permit (AuG Art. 9(1)). A person who is not visa-obliged and wants to take up residence needs the assurance of a short-stay or residence permit before entering (Art. 7(3)). A visa-obliged person with a granted permit receives an authorisation to issue a visa (ZAV Art. 20(2)).
For an employee, the employer company files the application. You register in person within eight days of arrival and may be asked for biometrics, and legal representation is by a lawyer. The registration is with the municipal residents' registry, not the APA (AuG Art. 11(1)). Permit types and conditions are on the residence permit page.
What applies to EEA and Swiss nationals and their family?
Persons under the free-movement law have a right of entry with a valid travel document, if there is no danger to public security or health and no entry ban (PFZG Art. 6(1)(a)-(c)). Third-country family members also need a visa under the Schengen acquis, and a valid residence card of another EEA state or Switzerland exempts them (PFZG Art. 6(2)).
The assurance of the permit is valid, as a rule, six weeks for a short-stay permit and three months for a residence, settlement or permanent-residence permit (PFZV Art. 22(2)).
What do EES and ETIAS change at the border?
The Entry/Exit System (EES) registers third-country nationals entering for a stay of at most 90 days in any 180-day period, and refused entries (AuG Art. 71b(1)). On 2 October 2025 the APA announced the EES launch for 12 October 2025. This page states no later operating date.
The APA is Liechtenstein's national ETIAS unit (AuG Art. 71i(1)), and the Act requires a visa or an ETIAS authorisation where one is required (Art. 7(1)). This page gives no ETIAS start date and does not say that ETIAS is required today.

Can I get a residence visa by opening a company in Liechtenstein?
No. Company ownership gives no right to a visa or to residence: founding a business or holding a stake has no influence on how the discretion in the permit procedure is exercised (ZAV Art. 17(2)). The APA grants permits, the Government usually decides a first residence permit for employed work (AuG Art. 67(1)), and this page promises no outcome.
Can I do business meetings or work while on a visit?
Any gainful activity needs a permit, whatever the length of stay (AuG Art. 10(1)). A firm or self-employed person from outside the EEA and Switzerland, and its employees, may provide a cross-border service for at most eight days within 90, notified two working days before it starts.
What happens if I stay longer than three months?
A stay without work of more than three months within six needs a permit (AuG Art. 9(1)). The permit-free period counts from first entry, and a shorter duration printed on the visa prevails. The residence permit page covers permit types and conditions.
Where do I apply for a Liechtenstein visa if I live far from a Swiss embassy?
The default is the Swiss representation at your place of residence. At listed locations Austria, Hungary or Lithuania is competent instead. The list can change, so check the official page of the Migration and Passport Office before you apply.
I live in India: which embassy handles my Liechtenstein visa application?

Which authority decides on my visa application?
The decision lies partly with the Swiss authorities and partly with the Liechtenstein Migration and Passport Office (APA). The official visa page does not say which cases go where, and this page does not guess.
Do I need a visa for Liechtenstein, for example as a US citizen?
It depends on the passport you hold. The APA points to the SEM website for the lookup, and this page gives no nationality list of its own. Switzerland and Liechtenstein, as a rule, apply the same entry rules.
Is Liechtenstein in the Schengen area?
Liechtenstein applies the Schengen rules. Its visa and entry rules apply only where the Schengen acquis applicable to Liechtenstein has no different provision (AuG Art. 2(3)). The accession protocol is dated 28 February 2008, and Art. 2(3) and 7(4) came into force on 19 December 2011.
How much does a Liechtenstein visa cost, and do children pay?
The statutory fee is EUR 90 per admissible visa procedure and EUR 45 for a child aged 6 to 12 (Ausl-GebV Art. 12, as read in October 2026). Children under six and PFZG family members are exempt, and the fee can be reduced or waived in an individual case.
Do I need ETIAS to enter Liechtenstein?
